July 31st, 2008

Last Tuesday I was sitting at my desk at work and it randomly struck me to call Apple and see if they had any iPhones in. I’m still a little pissed about the article I read on Yahoo! weeks before the release that said “DON’T RUSH OUT TO GET ONE THERE WELL BE PLENTY IN STOCK!” Yeah fucking right, nice call jackass. Not that I wanted to fight the lines anyways.

I called and it just so happened that they had gotten in a shipment that morning, she couldn’t however promise me that there would be any left after 5pm. I grabbed my keys and rushed out the door. I got there and there were about a dozen people ahead of me in the queue. Not bad, it took me about an hour to get through the line, and the process to set it up was super easy since I was already on AT&T. After I left there were about 25 people in line, so I’m glad I got there when I did because they were completely out of 16 gig by the time I left and only had 8 gig black.

I’m loving it so far, been tinkering with it alot trying to get it working just right. The battery life is one of the worst things about it right now, especially if I charge it via my laptop rather than straight from a wall charger, for some reason the laptop charge doesn’t hold for shit. The other huge issue I found was that it comes with Google Calendar installed and you cannot uninstall it. When I got the phone I was using web calendar software called 30boxes, it’s pretty cool and I liked that I could access it anywhere. They also have a web version for the iphone, however I figured that since Google Calendar was on my phone and I already use gmail, that I might as well just start using Google Calendar instead. So last Saturday I sat down and manually moved all my dates over, went to sync my phone calendar to my web calendar… and wouldn’t you know it. You can’t. Seriously. Biggest fucking idiotic disappoint of the year. Thank you Apple. Makes no sense what-so-ever. I hunted around for solutions and finally found through a third party that will sync your calendar via a Microsoft Exchange server. You can never get away from Microsoft apparently.

But other than that it’s great and there’s a plethara of applications for it, and I even figured out how to make free ringtones. It’s really easy and I can’t believe Apple gets away with charging for them.

End geek talk!
