July 29th, 2008

Today at work I was feverishly working away trying to pick up slack for a missing artist who didn’t get his stuff done before leaving for Canada while also working on all my own stuff.

About 2pm I needed to cut some labels by hand. I found the exacto knife but the blade was a bit dull so I decided to change it. I don’t use the exacto much but I figured out how to remove the blade. I put the new one in and carefully placed my fingers on the side of the blade to give it a tug to make sure it was secure, didn’t want it to slip and cut myself!! My fingers slipped off the blade and my instinct was to grab back for the blade.

SLASH!

Mistake. I looked down at my middle finger and saw a huge gash starting to push out thick heavy dark blood. I said “i just cut myself” and walked to the bathroom. Apparently I was so calm about it that my co-workers thought I had very minorly cut myself. After about 10 minutes in the bathroom no one had came to check on me and I couldn’t get it to stop bleeding. I went back into the office and the receptionist tried to put bandaids on it but they soaked up all of the blood in a matter of seconds and didn’t really seem to help much. After about 10 more minutes and with my finger throbbing I decided a trip to the ImediaCare would be a good idea just in case I needed a stitch.

So off I went, they got me in quickly and tried to remove the bandaids but they were some super mutant bandaids that had literally bonded with my skin and when the doctor yanked at the remaining piece on the back of my finger it came off almost effortlessly. That’s because she ripped my skin off! No fucking lie, she said I looked pale. Um because I just witnessed MY SKIN BEING RIPPED OFF.

She apologized and took a look at my finger. No stitches, I felt like I had overreacted but I just worried cause it wouldn’t stop bleeding on it’s own. So they wrapped it up for me and I can take the bandages off in two days. They also gave me a tetanus shot which had made my arm very very sore. The Bugs Bunny bandaid they gave me for it has yet to help relieve any of the pain.

And if you’ve never had the pleasure of being sliced up by a very sharp exacto knife… it feels like the largest papercut ever for like 3 hours after it happens.
